Introducing WFL in 2020
It is with great pleasure that the MMFL Board announces we will be joining forces with the MGFL to create a bigger and better softball experience… the WFL (Wisconsin Fastpitch League).
Dear MMFL Coaches and teams… …as we approach the end of the 2019 season, we have some exciting news to share with you. As you know, for a number of years two fastpitch leagues have been serving the Greater Milwaukee area, the MMFL (Metro Milwaukee Fastpitch League) and The MGFL ( Milwaukee Girls Fastpitch League). And over the years the distinction between the two has become a bit blurred…we look the same, function the same and serve a number of the same organizations. We truly have become companion organizations. So both organizations agreed, perhaps we should do something about this. The leadership role of this new organization will be our friend, Ben Weiler, the president of the MGFL. For those of you who know Ben you will agree he is the perfect person to take on this role in our new organization. His passion and love of the game is contagious. And he is in for the long haul. A number of the MMFL Board members, including myself will be available to help Ben through this transition. In addition to the unification, you will see other exciting things coming down the road, i.e. a year-end All-Star tournament, and a state wide expansion to include teams from beyond the GMA.
How does this unification affect your teams? Not at all. In fact, you will receive better opportunities… both leagues won’t be vying for the same fields and the same umpires throughout the season.
So…what will happen to all the money in the MMFL CD? Well, we will continue to give out two $500 Larry Pinkowski Scholarship to two players every year. Also, in conjunction with SEWSA (Southeastern Wisconsin Softball Association) the WFL will present two $500 scholarships annually, to young people interested in becoming umpires. The biggest hurdle young umpires have to overcome is the cost of all the equipment and uniforms they are required to purchase before they even hit the field. That cost is $500. By offering these scholarships, our hope is we will help increase the number of umpires and quality of service to the WFL and all softball throughout the state. On behalf of the MMFL Board, it has been a great pleasure to serve you and help guide this unification. We are very excited for the future of softball and the Wisconsin Fastpitch League.
Kindest regards, Paul Bertling President, MMFL
On a personal note… I would like thank you for giving me the chance to serve as your President for the last ten years. It has truly been an honor. It is bittersweet for me to move on, but passing the reins on to Ben…I do it knowing you will be in good hands.
